Music can have both positive and negative impacts on your study, depending on the type of music and the individual listener. Some studies have shown that classical music can improve focus and memory retention, while other genres such as old-school, pop or heavy metal can have the opposite effect and cause distractions.

We recommend listening to songs from your favorite artists and bands. Many of us associate good feelings with our favorite artists and bands, especially if we love listening to them during times of turmoil. When we’re stressed from schoolwork or our job, listening to our favorite artists and bands can help us calm down, ground us, and make us remember that everything will be okay in the end.

That’s because singing along or understanding the lyrics distracts me from studying, thereby being counterproductive. Some of my peers, however, prefer listening to the lyrics as they can associate the lyrics they sing with whatever passage they were reading in their textbooks.
